CYPRUS YOUTH DIPLOMACY ONLINE EVENT:
«UN75| Youth of Cyprus Celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the UN»
Cyprus Youth DiplomaCY is organising an online event titled «UN75| Youth of Cyprus Celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the UN» on Wednesday 16th December 2020, between 17:00 to 20:30 (Cyprus’ time) in order to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations and the 60th Anniversary of Cyprus’ Membership to the UN!
The event will take place in two parts: the first part will be the official part with a live panel discussion under the title “Youth for Multilateralism: the United Nations we want”. The online live panel discussion (17:00-18:30) will be live-streamed through the Facebook page of Cyprus Youth DiplomaCY. A keynote speech will be given by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus H.E. Mr. Nikos Christodoulides and then the panel discussion will follow with high level speakers related to youth and youth rights in the UN system, including the UN Youth Envoy Ms. Jayathma Wickramanayake, Mr. George Charonis, Associate Human Rights Officer at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Executive Director of Youth Board of Cyprus Mr. Menelaos Menelaou. The discussion will be moderated by Ms. Ioanna Demosthenous, President of Cyprus Youth DiplomaCY. The second part of the online event will be an online workshop via Zoom platform under the title “Youth Proposals and Ideas: the United Nations we want” (19:00-20:30) where youth of Cyprus will able to express their ideas and proposals for the future of the UN as well as the enhancement of the role of youth in the UN System. The aim of this online celebration is firstly, to inform young people of Cyprus regarding the role of the United Nations, the importance of multilateralism and the challenges the UN and multilateralism faces now-a-days. Secondly, the event would like to inform young people of Cyprus about the role of Cyprus as a UN Member State, taking into account also the 60th membership anniversary of Cyprus. In this regard, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus will be the key note speaker in the event. Thirdy, the role of youth in the UN system will be highlighted through the promotion of the importance of the SC Resolution 2250/2015 “Youth, Peace and Security”. This online event is a great opportunity to present the role of the UN Youth Envoy in Cyprus and Cyprus Youth DiplomaCY is very proud to announce the participation of the UN Youth Envoy Ms. Jayathma Wickramanayake as a panelist. Also, this event is a great opportunity to present the role of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in order to present the work of the UN Geneva office in relation to youth rights, the Human Right Council resolutions on youth and the effort for a youth convention to be drafted. Lastly, the event would like to showcase the impact that youth can have in relation to the work of the UN, through an online workshop that will follow the online conference under the title “Youth Ideas and Proposals: the United Nations we want”, with young people expresssing their ideas and suggestions about the role of the UN and the role of Cyprus as a MS.
